Whodunits and detective stories have been fan favorites even before movies were a thing. That's why Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, Arséne Lupin, and many other fictional detectives have been so famous for many years. We as humans love to hear a story and try to guess what happened or even be a part of it by following how the detective will get to the solution. It is one of the principles of storytelling: we are natural problem solvers. If we're watching a movie, and it gives us the clues, we are going to make something out of it, and it's so fun whenever a plot twist really gets you whenever you are following a story closely.
