11 Arrested as hoodlums burn LG Secretariat

BREAKING NEWS 1

The Niger State Police Command has announced the arrest of 11 individuals involved in the burning and vandalism of the Tafa Local Government Area (LGA) Secretariat. The incident occurred as nationwide protests began on August 1, 2024. The spokesperson for the command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, detailed the events in a statement released on Thursday.

Abiodun explained that the unrest began around 9:30 AM when miscreants from the Tafa area of Kagarko LGA in Kaduna State and Hayin-Diko in Gurara LGA, Niger State, converged at the Tafa LGA Secretariat. The mob vandalized the building, set two cars ablaze, and damaged two others. They also looted valuables from the premises.

Police and other security agencies responded promptly, arresting 11 suspects who were found with various weapons, including firearms. The police managed to disperse the crowd and recover some of the stolen items. The Kaduna-Abuja expressway, which had been blocked by the protesters, has since been cleared, and traffic flow has been restored.

The police have launched an investigation into the incident, aiming to apprehend other individuals involved. The command issued a warning to the public, parents, and residents to advise their wards against participating in violent demonstrations, the destruction of public property, and looting. The police emphasized that such actions would not be tolerated.
