Leaders of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) have confirmed holding a strategic meeting with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in Abuja on February 1, as part of efforts to strengthen opposition politics and preserve democratic pluralism ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party’s National Chairman, Yabagi Sani, who spoke after the meeting, explained that the discussion with Atiku was rooted in the shared objective of fortifying Nigeria’s multi-party democracy and creating viable political alternatives to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking to journalists, Sani stated, “The meeting was largely about strengthening democracy and protecting democratic pluralism, ensuring that Nigeria’s multi-party system is sustained and that opposition parties have the stability needed to function effectively.”
He added that opposition parties must begin early engagement to prevent being caught unprepared by any legal or logistical hiccups during the elections.
“Part of the strategy under discussion includes developing a ‘Plan B’, ensuring that if one platform faces disqualification, litigation or technical challenges, alternative platforms remain viable so the broader opposition movement is not derailed,” he said.
Although the meeting was held behind closed doors, political observers have linked it to former Vice President Atiku’s possible positioning of the ADP as a fallback option if he fails to clinch the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket.
However, Sani downplayed such speculations, noting that the consultations are wider and not centred on Atiku alone.
“The ongoing consultations are not limited to one individual or party but involve a broad range of opposition groups, political stakeholders and youth organisations, including dynamic civic platforms such as the National Youth Alliance,” he said.
Another senior ADP leader, who requested anonymity, told Punch that the conversation was not about forming a coalition per se but building understanding and synergy among like-minded politicians.
He said, “We met largely to discuss areas of collaboration and how we can work together ahead of the 2027 election. Opposition parties are trying to work together. In our case, we are not going to be part of any coalition, but we are engaging with leaders beyond Atiku.
“The conversation is centred on democracy, how to sustain it, how to develop the country, and how to address the issues affecting our nation. That is simply the essence of it.”
More Talks Planned With Youth Groups, Stakeholders
Sani also confirmed that similar meetings were being scheduled with other opposition figures and youth-led civic groups to broaden the scope of the opposition alliance and prepare for any electoral or legal contingencies.
“The focus is on creating an environment where opposition groups feel reinforced and encouraged, especially amid concerns that the ruling APC is attempting to weaken and discourage opposition participation,” he stated.
