THE Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will be staged in June and July.
The 2027 edition of Africa’s showpiece will be co-hosted by three countries for the first time ever — Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda
CAF President Patrice Motsepe announced the competition’s timing during a press conference following the confederation’s exco meeting yesterday in Tanzania, noting that the exact dates for the tournament would be announced later.
Holding AFCON in June and July will suit African players based in Europe and their clubs, as it is the off-season and the stars will not have to miss club games.
The last edition of the competition, held in Morocco, was in December 2025 and January 2026, with dozens of players missing key club matches for their European clubs.
Motsepe also debunked reports that CAF was planning to strip the three countries of their hosting rights due to a lack of preparedness.
The CAF president also announced the confederation’s plans to expand the AFCON to 28 participating teams, up from the current 24.
