APC governors have rejected political arrangements they believe could weaken the ruling party or affect President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign in 2027.
The governors reached the decision after a high-level meeting in Abuja on Monday night, as political activities intensify ahead of the general elections.
The meeting took place at the Imo State Governor’s Lodge and was chaired by Imo State Governor and Progressive Governors Forum Chairman, Hope Uzodimma.
After the meeting, Uzodimma said the governors had resolved to work solely for candidates fielded by the All Progressives Congress.
He explained that the forum would neither participate in nor endorse alliances capable of creating divided support for APC candidates during the elections.
“Our commitment is to the APC and the candidates sponsored by the party. We will not support an arrangement that weakens our candidates or threatens the party’s electoral prospects,” Uzodimma said.
He added that the governors’ campaign activities would be aligned with Tinubu’s re-election strategy and the broader objectives of the APC.
The decision comes amid controversy surrounding the Rainbow Coalition linked to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Wike remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party but has maintained that the coalition is focused on securing Tinubu’s return to office in 2027.
However, the emergence of candidates under political platforms outside the APC has raised concerns among some ruling party members.
They fear such candidates could divide votes and weaken the APC’s chances across different levels of the election.
Uzodimma said the APC governors would therefore concentrate their political efforts on candidates carrying the party’s ticket.
He stressed that the forum’s campaign structure would remain focused on strengthening the APC and supporting Tinubu’s second-term bid.
The governors’ position effectively separates their support for Tinubu from any political coalition that fields candidates outside the APC.
