Former Political Adviser to Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has sounded a stern warning on the need for utmost transparency in Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
Taking to his verified đť•Ź account on Monday, Baba-Ahmed urged political leaders and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take seriously the mounting concerns over electoral credibility.
He cautioned that anything less could trigger a national crisis.
“Voices are being raised regarding integrity of the 2027 elections. Our leaders and INEC should listen. Anything short of the most transparent elections will produce neither winners nor losers.
“Rigging will risk plunging this country into its worst crises. No one wants that,” Baba-Ahmed warned.

The new proposal suggests conducting all five categories of elections — presidential, senatorial, House of Representatives, governorship, and state assembly- on the same day.
If passed into law, the amended Electoral Act would empower INEC to oversee a one-day nationwide election, a move that has stirred debate across political and civil society circles.
Baba-Ahmed’s statement reflects broader public anxiety about the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process, following criticisms of the 2023 general elections.
Meanwhile, former Osun State Governor and Interim National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, has called on residents of the state to actively participate in the forthcoming Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) ahead of the August 8, 2026 governorship election.

According to a statement issued on Monday in Osogbo by the group’s Publicity Secretary, Abosede Oluwaseun, Aregbesola stressed the need to mobilise young eligible voters to take advantage of the CVR window, which begins on August 18, to set the tone for a “people-oriented and progressive” administration.
“The time has come to swing into action. The forthcoming CVR is crucial to the task ahead,” the former governor stated.
“It is important for everyone to actively participate, mobilise, and galvanise our people, especially young people of voting age.”
He reminded his supporters of their core mandate to restore progressive governance in Osun through issue-based campaigns and responsible political engagement.
