Former Governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu, has debunked speculation linking him to the newly unveiled opposition coalition, which has adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a viral video circulating on social media, Aliyu reaffirmed his loyalty to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), insisting that he remains a committed member of the party despite attending a high-level meeting in Abuja that sparked the rumours.
Naijaonpoint reports that the controversy arose after Aliyu’s presence at a political gathering in Abuja last Tuesday was interpreted by some as evidence of his alignment with the opposition coalition led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other prominent political figures.
Clarifying the nature of the event, Aliyu said, “That meeting on Tuesday was a PDP stakeholders’ meeting, and that was why I was there. But you could see that when it was declared at the last meeting that the coalition had adopted ADC, I wasn’t there.”
Aliyu stressed that political ambition and national service do not necessarily require switching political platforms.
He said, “I believe that whether it is personal ambition or concern about the state of Nigeria, you can contribute meaningfully from wherever you are.
“And in terms of personal ambition, that which Allah will give you, you will get it wherever you are. It is not moving from one party to another that determines that.”
While noting that he holds no ill will toward any politician who chooses to decamp, Aliyu warned against misleading the public.
He further stated, “It is very important for us to understand that we cannot continue to take Nigerians for a ride. And please, I have no problem with anybody who wants to join another party.”
Aliyu concluded his message by reiterating his position within the PDP and leaving the door open for future decisions if necessary.
He added, “I remain a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, the PDP. I am still a member. If it becomes necessary, I could decide what to do. But as of now, I am still with the PDP.”
