A Professor of Political Science at the Nasarawa State University, Jideofor Adibe, says there seems to be no credible alternatives to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in the forthcoming 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Adibe, however, said defections may lead to APC’s implosion.
He was reacting on the defection of Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to the APC.
DAILY POST reports that Mutfwang officially defected to the ruling party on Tuesday where he was promised a second term.
Reacting, Adibe said: “There seems to be no credible alternatives to the APC. What I can say about this defections for now is that it has created a momentum for the ruling party.
“Having said this, if tomorrow you have one or two governors that, let’s say the ADC is able to resolve some of its problems, and people start to see it as a credible alternative, and you have one or two defections, it will become self perpetuating.
“Eve if the ADC gets only five seats, the momentum will seem to shift very dramatically to its side. So right now, it is getting the momentum.
“This defection will also generate disease of the implosion, or potential implosion, of the APC. So many people are moving into the party, not all of their aspirations and ambitions will be satisfied there.
“That will create a bulk of dissatisfied people or politicians, which potentially, if the ADC is able to present itself as a credible alternative, which will potentially be a recruiting ground. But for that to happen, there has to be a credible alternative.
“Right now, there doesn’t seem to be a credible alternative. All the existing parties have one issue or the other.”
