Governor Alex Otti

The governor of Abia State, Alex Otti on Friday granted an executive waiver of employment to Akaniro Gethrude Chinyere, the wife of a blind teacher at Ozuitem Secondary School.

In a statement by Ukoha Njoku, the chief press secretary to the governor said Otti in a display of kindness and compassion extended the gesture to Chinyere who has been working with her husband in the school on a pro bono basis.

He said Chinyere has since demonstrated passion and commitment to the educational development of students in her community.

Chinyere’s appointment letter was presented to her by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education (Basic and Secondary), Kenechukwu Nwosu, on Sunday, August 3.

“The story of the dedicated blind teacher and his supportive wife had previously gone viral on social media, prompting the Governor to instruct his Special Adviser, Sir Nwosu, to visit the school and address the existing challenges.

“The Governor’s intervention has had a transformative impact not only on Mrs. Chinyere and her husband’s lives, but also on the Ozuitem people in Bende LGA, as well as the State’s Education sector. The recent recruitment of over 5,380 teachers has significantly enhanced the teacher-student ratio in various schools, including Ozuitem Secondary School to improve and boost the teaching of over 350 students in the school.

“This gesture serves as a testament to His Excellency’s unwavering dedication to the welfare of Abians and his unrelenting commitment to improving the Education sector in the State.

“The highly elated Mrs. Chinyere and her husband were overwhelmed with emotion, celebrating her new role and thanking the Governor for his kindness,” Ukoha said.
