The Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) will begin to recycle waste products in the state.
This was disclosed on Monday by Ogbonnaya Okereke, the general manager ASEPA, during a press briefing, after the weekly executive meeting.
“We are transiting from linear economy to circular economy in the area of waste management, which is modern collection, and of course recycling and repurposing.
“Instead of wasting the wastes, they can be used for something else by recycling them, making them available to be useful again”, Ogbonnaya said.
The manager stated that different organisations have come to discuss how they can partner with the state government on this new move.
Speaking during the press briefing, the commissioner for information Prince Okey Kanu highlighted the state’s progress in waste management through the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA).
He noted that while the cleanliness of public spaces has improved, the agency is shifting focus to modern waste collection strategies, including direct collection from residential areas and businesses.
“ASEPA will also introduce a revised tariff system for waste disposal, with the government offering some assistance while citizens contribute through minimal charges” Kanu said.
The government called on residents to help monitor public assets, particularly ASEPA waste bins, which are being targeted by scrap dealers.
The commissioner urged citizens to report cases of theft and warned against fraudsters extorting money under the guise of ASEPA officials.
