The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has debunked claims that its platform has been hijacked by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Senate President David Mark, and other political bigwigs as a vehicle to contest the 2027 general elections.
Naijaonpoint reports that the party’s National Publicity Secretary (South), Effiong Nyong, stated this in an interview with Daily Post on Wednesday, stressing that the involvement of the political heavyweights was a patriotic move to challenge worsening governance and not an attempt to dominate the party.
Nyong, who was the ADC’s 2023 governorship candidate in Cross River State, dismissed the narrative of a political takeover.
He said, “I think it is very wrong to say that ADC has been hijacked.
“In the interest of the country, these people, having noticed the drift into destruction and valuing their individual strengths, decided to come together and tame the scourge.”
He acknowledged the right of critics to express concerns but cautioned against hasty conclusions or politically motivated speculations.
He further stated, “Disgruntled persons are also free to say what they want, it is within their rights. But we must not be stampeded into reacting to every noise.”
According to Nyong, the coalition’s goal is to present a united front against what he described as the capture of Nigeria by self-serving elites.
“The objective of the coalition is to rescue ourselves from those who have captured Nigeria with impunity and are boasting about it,” he said.
He added that 2025 will mark the halfway point of the current administration, offering Nigerians a chance to weigh two distinct realities, life before and after the 2023 elections.
Nyong also took a swipe at Nigeria’s current political leadership, accusing them of being more preoccupied with securing endorsements for 2027 than improving the living conditions of citizens.
