The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has given fresh assurances that the process leading to the emergence of its 2027 presidential candidate would be transparent and credible.
The assurance was given on Monday by the ADC Assistant National Chairman, Usani Usani, during an interview with Arise News.
He also disclosed that three people have already shown interest in emerging as the ADC presidential candidate for the 2027 polls.
Naijaonpoint reports that the names he mentioned during the interview are former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, and former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar.
“We are awaiting a formal process. Currently, we have three people who have indicated interest in the presidential race: Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Atiku Abubakar.
“I guarantee that the ADC will provide a candidate based on openness, transparency, and truth”, he stated.
Reacting to reports that a group within the South South caucus of the party has endorsed Amaechi to emerge as the ADC flagbearer, Usani declared that it is within the right of the region to support any candidate, but the final decision rests with the party process.
“We had a leadership meeting in the South-South, led by Chief John Odigie-Oyegun. Amaechi attended and requested our backing as ‘one of our own.’ There was a voice vote with a loud ‘aye’ and no dissenting ‘nay.’ In a pedestrian understanding, one could say the South-South has agreed to support Amaechi, but this does not preclude any member’s independent thinking or the eventual national process,” he said.
Zoning
On the issue of zoning the party’s presidential ticket, the ADC Assistant National Chairman said it is premature for him to make comments on the issue as there is a manifesto, policy and constitution review committee still working on such issues.
He assured that the official position of the party on zoning would be made known once the committee’s task is complete.
“We have policy, manifesto, and constitution review committees at work. It would be premature for me to comment ahead of their findings. The ADC aims to reflect the common opinion of the people to remain democratic. While I have personal opinions, as a party official, I must wait for the party’s official position,” he explained.
