Human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has applauded the coming together of key opposition figures under a new coalition that formally merged with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Tuesday night, describing it as a “long overdue but commendable step toward rescuing Nigeria’s democracy.”
The development, which has sparked reactions across the political landscape, saw influential leaders including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai align with the coalition in what is seen as a potential game-changer ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Reacting to the move in a statement he shared with THE WHISTLER on Wednesday, Adeyanju expressed optimism that the coalition would offer Nigerians a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), whose tenure he described as “disastrous”.
“I’m proud of the opposition for finally coming together,” Adeyanju said.
“Special thanks to Atiku, Obi, and other top opposition leaders for setting aside personal ambition to make this happen. This is what they should have done in 2023.”
He stressed that a fragmented opposition had paved the way for the APC’s continued dominance and urged other major figures not yet part of the coalition to consider joining forces.
His appeal was particularly directed at former Kano State governor and presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso.
“I hope Kwankwaso will also do the same. It’s time for all opposition leaders to place national interest above ego and regional calculations,” he added.
“Whenever you wake up, it is your morning. Good morning to the opposition.”
He told THE WHISTLER on Wednesday that “a united opposition stands a better chance than a fragmented one” and urged “every political figure to put aside their interest for national interest to rescue the country.”
The ADC, once seen as a fringe party, has gained renewed attention with this merger.
Former Senate President, David Mark and former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola emerged as the National Chairman and Secretary on Tuesday night.
The new leadership is expected to formally unveil an agenda and roadmap for governance reforms, national unity, and economic recovery in the coming days ahead of the 2026 primary elections and the general elections in 2027.
