After 38 Years, Marvel Officially Unveils Venom's Ultimate Form As A Literal God

venom moves his tongue around in marvel comics cover art

Marvel introduces the most powerful symbiote to date in the form of Eddie Brock’s perfect form, capable of overpowering Knull himself without Venom‘s help. The evolution of symbiote lore has seen a dramatic shift from biological street-level parasites to cosmic, primordial deities. Symbiotes’ baseline expanded with Venom and Carnage, who introduced the ability to manifest physical blades and axes from biological mass. As the Life Foundation symbiotes like Scream and Agony appeared, symbiote powers became more specialized, with additional abilities such as sonic-resistance, hair-like tendrils, and metabolic acid production.

Symbiotes like Anti-Venom broke the mold by introducing healing properties and the ability to heal and burn other symbiotes. The stakes were raised significantly during the King in Black era, where it was revealed that symbiotes are living shadows forged from the Void. This revelation gave hosts like Eddie Brock the ability to traverse the hive-mind across time and space and cemented symbiotes as some of the most dangerous beings in the Marvel Universe.

While Knull has been stopped before, the king of all symbiotes continues to be unstoppable. Yet, there are characters just as powerful as him out there.

Eddie Brock reveals his Illuminated symbiote in Knull #4

After escaping from Hela’s cage, defeating Thanos himself, and becoming a being of light, Knull faces an ascended Eddie Brock who wields the power of the Illuminated. This Eddie Brock has truly transcended all sin, and he has left the Venom symbiote behind to be a being of pure light. Unfortunately, Eddie’s purity of heart plays against him, as Knull takes advantage of Eddie’s mercy to stab him in the heart. However, the Illuminated is just as powerful as the King in Black, and his symbiote form easily overpowers Knull, at least at first.

After 36 Years, It’s Time for Marvel to Admit a Hard Truth About the Venom Symbiote

Before the decades of villainy, destruction, and death that Venom has wrought the Marvel Universe, Spider-Man was the first villain in Venom’s story.

The Illuminated symbiote is almost fully white, with one of the largest spider-dragon chest symbols to date, plus spiked armor platings on his shoulders and legs. Eddie Brock’s Illuminated symbiote also spawns large wings, similarly to his King in Black form. While he resembles the white-clad Anti-Venom, the Illuminated is perhaps the most powerful symbiote ever introduced in the Marvel Universe. The only reason why Knull is able to defeat him is due to the villain’s sheer ruthlessness.

Symbiotes Have Ascended To The Top Tier Of Marvel’s Power Rankings

The symbiote hierarchy has undergone a stratospheric ascent in recent years, from its first major peak during the King in Black event to the 2026 Death Spiral arc that has pushed the power scaling into even more volatile territory. Knull endangered the world and overshadowed Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and Eddie Brock briefly became the most powerful being on Earth as the King in Black. Torment now assassinates heroes and villains alike with even more cold-blooded cruelty than Carnage himself.

However, the true pinnacle of this ascension is the current journey of Eddie Brock, whose Illuminated symbiote form has transcended the role of a planetary guardian to achieve genuine godhood. This Eddie’s evolution reaches its zenith as he confronts a resurrected God of the Void. This version of Brock is a cosmic architect who has mastered the All-Light, which grants him the power to rewrite the very nature of the symbiote hive-mind. With even more symbiotes making their debut, it’s increasingly clear that there’s no ceiling for the Klyntar’s power.
