The tournament to crown DC’s greatest champion has already forced heroes to battle their friends, resulting in some of the Justice League’s most horrific deaths to date. But things have changed in the newest round, allowing the contestants to recruit one partner, living or dead, from outside the tournament. And after careful consideration, Superman makes his choice, selecting Billy Batson a.k.a. Shazam as his battle brother.
Forced to do battle with both Guy Gardner and Hal Jordan in a fight to the death, heavy damage is dealt on both sides. But once Superman reveals the true purpose for recruiting Shazam to his side, Billy Batson is all too ready to assist the Man of Steel, as only he can. Speaking his famous magic word, Billy passes the power of Shazam to Superman. Crowning a new Champion of Magic, and transforming Kal-El into the new Shazam.

The Man of Steel’s Magic Weakness is Finally Erased
It made perfect sense for Superman to recruit Shazam as a partner, considering the pair are about as equally-matched in strength and powers as two superheroes ever can be. The only exception being Shazam’s mastery of the mystical abilities of magic, to which Superman is famously vulnerable. Since that’s a weakness exploited whenever facing down a Green Lantern, let alone the two greatest on Earth, Shazam is the ideal ally.
And in the end, the ideal upgrade, rendering Superman not only invulnerable to magic, but possessed of immeasurable power and strength. A point proven when Superman-Shazam charges the Lanterns, obliterated their defenses, and kills both in mere seconds. While this upgrade may not be permanent, fans will always have this glimpse of Superman in his most invulnerable, ascendant form.
