The heated debates sparked by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe’s defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) prompted Paul Ibe, senior special adviser on media to ADC chieftain and elder statesman Atiku Abubakar, to express serious concern.
He emphasized in tweets posted to his official X account that the Senate should refrain from targeting the legislator. See What Happened.
Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, a lawmaker from Abia State, recently made headlines when he announced his defection from the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) to the ADC.
The move did not sit well with some in the opposition, and the Senate reportedly raised several questions. The federal lawmaker was also warned that his seat could be declared vacant if he did not renounce the alignment.
In response, Paul Ibe voiced his concerns on his official X handle, urging the Senate to desist from targeting the Abia State legislator. He noted that the questions and threats appeared to come from supporters of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Ibe argued that Senator Abaribe did nothing wrong by aligning with the ADC and warned those invoking the constitution against him to reconsider.
“Tinubu’s Senate is now abruptly citing articles of the Nigerian constitution to challenge Sen. Abaribe’s defection to the ADC. When the ruling party was pushing opposition legislators into the APC, where was the Senate headed by Senator Akpabio?” he wrote.
