Recent market research reveals that, in the last decade, Samsung has managed to sell an impressive figure of almost 3 billion phones. This marks a personal milestone that will be very difficult for another brand to overcome in the future. It also puts it above its main competitors by a notable difference.

Samsung surpassed Apple with almost 3 billion phones sold in the last decade

According to IDC data (compiled by AltIndex), in the last decade, Samsung phone sales exceeded Apple’s by 33%. This translates into 2.93 billion smartphones sold by the South Korean giant. On the other hand, the Cupertino-based company achieved 2.2 billion iPhone shipments during the same period. IDC used shipments during the period Q1 2014–Q1 2024 for the study.

Samsung not only surpassed Apple by a good margin, but its smartphone sales over the last decade exceed the combined sales of Xiaomi, Vivo and Huawei. These companies have experienced exponential growth over the last decade thanks to their good work. However, they still have a long way to go to surpass Samsung in terms of sales.

An interesting fact is that Samsung has been experiencing an annual decrease in smartphone shipments for a few years now. This translates into a 10% loss of global market share during the last decade. However, not even that has been enough for Apple or other rivals to take its position.

The best and worst years for Samsung phone sales

During the decade studied, two years stood out in particular for the sales of Samsung smartphones. First, the company’s best year was 2015, when they launched the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Note 5. The Galaxy S6 was one of the company’s personal milestones after finally abandoning plastic in its flagships. The company had experimented with this before by launching the Galaxy Alpha. That year, Samsung sold 320,9 million mobile devices, while Apple reached 231.5 million.

Then the year 2022 stands out as the weakest for the company in terms of phone sales. Samsung achieved 258.2 million phone sales in 2022, with Apple achieving 225.3 million shipments.

2023 was a good year for the company

After a few years of declining annual shipment figures, 2023 could change the trend for Samsung. According to IDC, Samsung sold 286.6 million smartphones that year. So, the gap between the company and its rivals could widen in the coming years.
