A dramatic political controversy has erupted in Rivers State after reports spread online claiming that former governor Rotimi Amaechi was attacked while travelling through Ikwerre Local Government Area. Watch How It Happened.
But now, the Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area, Charles Wobodo, has come forward to strongly deny the allegations, saying the situation was misunderstood and wrongly reported.
According to Wobodo, members of the local vigilante security group known as OSPAC were simply performing their normal checkpoint duties when the incident occurred.
He explained that he was also close to the area at the time because he was attending a burial ceremony nearby.
After hearing rumours of an attack, the council chairman said he immediately contacted the vigilante commander to find out what really happened.
From the explanation he received, Amaechi’s convoy reportedly stopped close to the checkpoint and gunshots were suddenly fired into the air, causing panic among residents and people around the area. The unexpected gunfire made many people run for safety.
Wobodo also questioned the claim that the vigilantes planned an attack.
According to him, Amaechi had travelled from the airport through places like Omagwa without any confrontation.
He even alleged that a government vehicle belonging to the vigilante group was damaged during the incident before the convoy eventually left the scene.
