‘How did I let that happen? Oh, I know why: I was 19 and I didn’t want to upset anyone, and I wanted to keep my job. That’s why.’

The actress, who recently starred as Elizabeth Holmes in the Hulu series The Dropout, said it’s “very important” for actors to be confident on set.

She said, “Nothing can completely crush me when it comes to work. I am unbreakable! Nothing can destroy my life unless it has to do with my family.

“Of course being a parent changes your view of things, but it’s not just that. It finally gets to the point where it’s okay to be proud of your work. It’s okay to be proud, it’s okay to have faith – it’s really important.”

Amanda added that despite hard work, she feels that she has also had many “lucky windfalls” in her career and that she is not entitled to find success.

She said, “I’ve never passed a day without feeling like I’ve worked really hard. I have no right. I mean, I’m entitled to respect, I guess; we are all.

‘But I have no problem with rights. I am very lucky and a lot of hard work and a lot of being in the right place at the right time. I understand all that.’

Amanda’s portrayal of the disgraced founder Elizabeth Holmes of the now-liquidated healthcare company Theranos was a character she hadn’t played with before in her career, and it left her with a taste for more.

She said, ‘You’ve done all this preparation and it’s muscle memory now; you’re already walking and talking differently, so you’re already halfway there. Now you just have to have the emotion behind it as the character. It’s so much fun.’

On her Emmy nomination for lead actress, she said: “It’s a little surreal that we’re here now, that we’re nominated, and I’ve been nominated; I was picked out.

“I haven’t spent any part of my career picking, ever. [I had] no expectation of being picked, and that’s partly my self-mockery.

“Never expect anything great, prepare for the worst, just continue on my path.”

Uncanny resemblance: In addition to nailing Holmes' signature baritone voice, the actress said reaching out to the disgraced founder of Theranos was also a crucial part of her transformation in The Dropout

Speaking of her collaboration with series creator Elizabeth Meriwether, Amanda added: “With the help of an incredible group of writers, she has written the perfect series.

“There’s not a single beat in it that feels like it doesn’t fit. It’s a miracle, that script, and the direction and tone of it really worked.

She said, “I think it was really important, the tone, to make it feel real.”
