The Anambra State Government has banned the practice of students writing assignments directly in textbooks, describing it as wasteful and unsustainable.
The directive was issued by the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, during a workshop for private school proprietors and teachers held on Friday in Awka.
According to Chuma-Udeh, the move is intended to ensure that textbooks remain reusable, particularly for younger siblings who may need them in subsequent academic years.
She also highlighted the need for textbooks to be inclusive, reflecting diversity, promoting equality, and addressing the varied needs of all learners.
“The government will not tolerate non-compliance with this directive,” she warned.
Chuma-Udeh called on parents, teachers, and school administrators to strictly adhere to the new rule.
She urged stakeholders to report any violations to the Ministry of Education.
She added that the initiative is part of Gov. Chukwuma Soludo’s efforts to reduce the financial burden on families while advancing quality and sustainable education in the state.
