Google will start rolling out the Android 15 update to Google Pixels starting October 15. The next big Android OS update will come with several new features. However, one specific area we want to see improvements in is the handling of old and duplicate notifications. If you have multiple Android devices but use one as your daily driver, seeing the same old notifications again on the secondary device is quite annoying. Now, Google seems to be fixing that as it has been testing several notification improvements in Android 15.
Android 15 could bring several notification-related improvements you’ve been waiting for
For starters, the latest beta for Android 15 reportedly has a fix for your old notifications headache. The behavioral change was first spotted in Android 15 QPR1 by none other than Mishaal Rahman (for Android Authority). While tinkering around Android QPR1 Beta 2, Rahman found out that the system automatically rejects notifications that are two weeks old by default.
Notifications that are two weeks old no longer alert you through a notification tone or vibration. In fact, you’ll not even see a full-size notification. However, he mentions that some details will still be there. This will ensure that you catch up with the app or contact for which you might receive the notifications.
Besides, Rahman also reported some additional notification improvements that could make it to Android 15. One appears to be the “Notifications cooldown” which was previously reported at the time of the Developer Preview release. As the name suggests, this notification-related feature tones down consecutive notifications from certain apps by lowering their volume ensuring you won’t get annoyed.
You might be able to sync notification dismissals as well
On top of that, Google seems to be also working on “sync notification dismissals” across Android devices. This feature will have a similar impact as the “old notification rejection.” However, it requires users to dismiss the notifications to work.
With this feature in place, you won’t come across any notifications on your secondary Android device if you have previously dismissed them on your primary device. Time will tell if any of these features make it to the stable version of Android 15. All that said, it’s good to see Google addressing the problems of the users and trying to make Android more aligned with users’ requirements.
