Android has always been characterized by being a fairly open OS. This contributed to its enormous growth in a relatively short time. However, over time, Google has become more strict in terms of security filters for accepting third-party apps. While the situation with phones seems to be fine, Google’s limits on Android Auto, which have prevented the arrival of certain apps, are not going down well with the EU.
Google limits the arrival of certain apps to Android Auto, and the EU is not happy about it
In 2021, Google did not allow the release of JuicePass on Android Auto. JuicePass is an Enel-developed app that provides map navigation and messaging while driving. In a way, it could be a direct rival to Google Maps or other Google navigation services (such as Waze). At that time, Italian anti-policy authorities fined Google 102 million euros.
Google appealed the ruling to the Italian Council of State. In response, the Italian authorities requested assistance from the CJEU (Court of Justice of the European Union). However, the response was not positive for Google. “Google’s refusal to provide third-party access to Android Auto platform may be in breach of competition rules,” Court Advocate General Laila Medina said.
Google claimed that JuicePass raised security concerns as a reason for limiting access to Android Auto. The company also stated that the app did not have a “specific template,” which appears to be a requirement. However, Medina believes that the company could be abusing its dominant position. Preventing or delaying the arrival of third-party development on the platform without a compelling justification can lead to a legal case.
In the meantime, Google claims that it has been working to resolve the situation. “We note the opinion of the Advocate General and await the final decision of the Court. Since this case started, we have worked to add the Enel template asked for, and many similar apps are already available globally on Android Auto,” a company’s spokesperson said. The next statement from the CJEU judges regarding Google’s limits on Android Auto will arrive in the coming months.
