Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital after receiving treatment for injuries sustained in a road accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
Gbenga Omotoso, Lagos commissioner for information, confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that the former world heavyweight champion has been “deemed clinical fit to recuperate from home”.
The incident occurred on Monday when a Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and members of his team crashed into a stationary truck on the busy highway.
Two of his close associates, Kevin Latif Ayodele, personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, strength and conditioning coach, sadly lost their lives in the crash.
The British–Nigerian boxer survived the accident with minor injuries and was immediately taken to hospital for medical attention.
Omotoso explained that Joshua had been receiving treatment at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, and was formally discharged on Wednesday afternoon.
He stated that the boxer, accompanied by his mother, proceeded to a funeral home in Lagos to pay respect to the remains of his late associates.
“Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu deeply appreciate the public concern and show of love and affection over this very sad and unfortunate incident,” Omotoso said.
The Ogun State Police Command earlier disclosed that a burst tyre triggered the crash.
However, the Federal Road Safety Corps maintained that initial findings suggested speeding and wrongful overtaking were responsible.
Although born in England, Joshua maintains strong ties to his hometown of Sagamu in Ogun State and frequently visits Nigeria.
He was also in the country last year, where he interacted with celebrities and presented President Bola Tinubu with a signed boxing glove.
The boxer returned to Nigeria only days after knocking out Jake Paul in an exhibition fight at the Kaseya Centre in Miami.
