BRITISH-NIGERIAN former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been released from the hospital after undergoing treatment for the injuries he sustained during a fatal road accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The 36-year-old globally recognised sports superstar was involved in the accident on Monday while on vacation in Nigeria from his base in England and sustained injuries while two of his friends lost their lives.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Lagos State commissioner for information Gbenga Omotoso said Joshua had been “deemed clinically fit to recuperate from home”.
A Lexus SUV in which Joshua and his associates were travelling in rammed into a stationary truck in Ogun State, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Two of the two-time unified world champion’s close associates — Kevin Latif Ayodele, his personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, his strength and conditioning coach — died in the accident.
Joshua survived the crash with minor injuries and was taken to a hospital in Lagos.
Omotoso revealed that Joshua had been receiving treatment at the Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, following the accident, and was discharged on Wednesday afternoon.
The commissioner added that the boxer and his mother then visited the funeral home in Lagos where the remains of the late associates are kept, to pay their final respects.
“Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu deeply appreciate the public concern and show of love and affection over this very sad and unfortunate incident,” Omotoso added.
The tragic road crash occurred just days after Joshua brutally knocked out YouTuber-turned-fighter Jake Paul in a bout broadcast live on Netflix, which drew global attention.
