Marvel star Anthony Mackie is a wanted man in his upcoming action thriller.
Fresh off taking the Captain America mantle in 2025’s Captain America: Brave New World, the actor behind the character previously known as Falcon will take the Lone Wolf role, with a former X-Men star as his Cub, in a new film from the director of Limitless.
Barracuda is set to star Mackie as a man with a sordid past, alongside Logan’s Dafne Keen as a kidnap victim, in a thriller from director Neil Burger and executive producer Robert Zemeckis (via Deadline). The cast also includes Steven Bauer and Anthony Del Negro. The film goes before cameras this week.
Barracuda’s familiar Lone-Wolf-and-Cub dynamic is teased in its synopsis, which reads, “When Karl (Mackie), a former smuggler with a haunted past, storms a nightclub in Mexico to rescue Jodie (Keen), a kidnapped teenage girl, he ignites a chain reaction of blood and bullets that burns across 100 miles of deadly roads toward the U.S. border.”
It continues, “The breakout turns into a high-speed race when Karl kills the brother of the ruthless club owner and steals his prized 1973 Plymouth Barracuda. Now hunted by relentless criminals, Karl and Jodie tear across the desert with no way to slow down.”
Barracuda director Burger praised the movie’s script by Adam Mason and Simon Boyes, saying, “I’ve been looking to make a non-stop action thriller and I’ve finally found it with this great screenplay.”
He went on to hype the film’s action, enthusing, ”This one never lets up. It’s out-of-control, relentless mayhem in a real-time sprint to the border. I’ve also been wanting to work with Anthony Mackie for some time and know we’ll make a great team. As with Limitless and Inheritance, I’m inventing new visual techniques to make this movie a truly wild ride.”
Barracuda producer Arianne Fraser praised Burger, saying in a statement:
Neil Burger has a proven track record for directing films with a striking visual style and pacing. Barracuda promises to be the next display of his superlative visionary skill as a filmmaker.
Producer Delphine Perrier added:
We are delighted that Anthony Mackie, an actor so beloved by audiences worldwide, has joined the team to bring this adrenaline packed film to life on the big screen. He is the ideal actor to give our hero Karl, that perfect blend of cunning, physical prowess and deeply human vulnerability that the role requires.
Mackie gets set to work on Barracuda even as post-production continues on his next MCU project, the highly-anticipated Avengers: Doomsday. He’s also lined up a role in David Mamet’s drama Speed-the-plow.
Mackie’s co-star Keen made her screen debut as the Cub to Hugh Jackman’s Lone Wolf in the 2017 blockbuster Logan, going on to reprise her role in Deadpool & Wolverine. She’s also set to star in the sex comedy The Marshmallow Experiment and the horror film Night Comes.
Barracuda director Burger looks to rebound critically after his 2025 thriller Inheritance and 2023 mystery drama The Marsh King’s Daughter were both greeted with lukewarm reviews. The director’s critical high-point remains 2006’s The Illusionist.
Barracuda does not yet have a release date.
