Detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on Thursday openly confronted the Federal High Court in Abuja, insisting that his trial could not proceed because he had not filed his final written address.
In a viral video from the day’s proceedings, Kanu is seen raising his voice at the presiding judge, Justice James Omotosho, challenging the legality of the charges and the court’s decision to move ahead with judgment.
Kanu argued that the prosecution relied on what he described as a repealed law, insisting that no court had the authority to continue with proceedings based on such a charge.
He challenged the court to identify the legal provision that allows for judgment without a final address from the defence.
He said, “Which law states that you can charge me on a repealed law? Show me. Omotosho, where is the law? Any judgment declared in this Court is complete rubbish.
“You don’t know the law. Show me where it says you can waive the right to a final address. Omotosho, show me the law.”
The dramatic exchange heightened tension in the courtroom, with the judge insisting on decorum despite Kanu’s continuous interruptions.
Thursday’s proceedings formed part of the final stages of Kanu’s long-running terrorism trial, which has spanned nearly a decade and remains one of Nigeria’s most politically sensitive legal battles.
Justice Omotosho had earlier dismissed multiple motions filed by Kanu seeking to halt judgment and challenge the court’s jurisdiction.
