Kenneth Okonkwo, top figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has lashed out at the government following the arrests of military officers allegedly plotting a coup, warning that any attempt at a “civilian coup” is really election rigging in disguise.
Speaking on Channels TV, Okonkwo didn’t hold back. He criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for scrapping indirect primaries, saying it’s a sneaky move that marginalizes grassroots party members and ensures that only handpicked candidates get the nod. “By concentrating candidate selection, they’ve turned internal party democracy into a joke,” Okonkwo fumed.
He also slammed inconsistencies in electronic transmission of election results, pointing out the government’s push for full online party registration while claiming nationwide electronic voting is impossible. Okonkwo warned this selective enforcement of rules is designed to cement the APC in power and crush opposition chances.
“So Tinubu just arrested some military people and said they planned a coup against him,” Okonkwo said. “That is a military coup. A civilian coup? That’s when elections are rigged!”
His fiery comments are raising serious questions about election fairness, internal party democracy, and Nigeria’s political future.
