The All Progressives Congress (APC) has affirmed Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, as the party’s consensus candidate for the 2026 governorship election in the state.
Naijaonpoint reports that the motion for affirmation was moved on Monday in Ado-Ekiti by the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, and seconded by the Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Stephen Aribasoye.
Speaking during the exercise, the Chairman of the Affirmation Congress Committee, Ahmed Ododo, said the decision reflected the governor’s “giant strides in various sectors which have benefitted the people of Ekiti.”
He added that APC remained a disciplined party that had earned the trust of the people through Oyebanji’s leadership style.
The affirmation came days after protests broke out at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja over the disqualification of businessman and politician, Kayode Ojo, from the governorship primary.
Chanting solidarity songs, party members from Ekiti, mostly women, stormed the secretariat with placards rejecting what they described as an attempt to impose a consensus candidate.
Some inscriptions read: “We Say No to Kayode Ojo’s Disqualification,” “We Don’t Want Consensus,” “Ekiti Women Reject BAO,” and “APC Must Let Ekiti People Choose Their Candidate.”
The protesters also chanted: “Ekiti says No to Governor Biodun Oyebanji,” and “Yes to Kayode Ojo.”
