The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta North has thrown its full weight behind the call for a new Anioma State.
The proposed state is expected to join the Southeast as the sixth state in the zone.
In a formal communication to the Senate Subcommittee on State Creation, the party leadership in Delta North declared that Anioma is “ready for statehood.”
The letter, signed by APC Delta North Chairman, Chief Adizue Eluaka, emphasized that the people of the zone stand united on the matter.
“For us, this is long overdue. The APC Delta North Senatorial District is fully and unequivocally in support of the creation of Anioma State,” he wrote.
According to him, establishing Anioma is not just a political ambition but a “matter of fairness and strategic advantage for the federation.”
Chief Eluaka stressed that there is no disagreement in Delta North over the demand. He noted that the agitation aligns with equity, justice, and the historical identity of the people.
He urged lawmakers to recognise those who championed the idea in the past, referencing key figures.
“We call upon the Distinguished Senate to act in solidarity with the legacy of Chief Dennis Osadebey and other patriots of Anioma who championed this noble cause,” he said.
He also applauded Senator Ned Nwoko for initiating the renewed push in the National Assembly.
Eluaka pointed out that the Southeast remains the only region with five states while others have six, a situation he described as lopsided and unfair. “The agitation for an additional state for the Southeast actually began with Senator Nwoko’s bill,” he noted.
The APC chieftain reminded lawmakers of the painful experiences Anioma communities endured during the civil war era. He said the move will bring healing and restore a sense of belonging for the people.
“The creation of Anioma State presents a chance for healing, affirmation, and restoration of pride in us as a people,” he stated.
He insisted that Anioma has the population, resources, and administrative readiness to function as a state.
Eluaka added that the new state would strengthen the Southeast economically and politically while correcting a long-standing imbalance.
“By creating Anioma as the sixth state of the Southeast, Nigeria will strengthen the zone’s political participation, stability, and national representation,” he added.
He appealed to the Senate and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to support the proposal, describing it as a nation-building effort that will deepen unity and improve representation.
“The creation of Anioma State will stand as both an act of justice and a reaffirmation of the Senate’s responsiveness to the aspirations of the Nigerian people,” he said.
Meanwhile, it will be recalled that calls for restructuring and additional states have been gaining momentum in recent months, with lawmakers from various zones pushing similar proposals to address perceived regional imbalances.
