The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in the just-concluded local government elections in Lagos State, winning all chairmanship positions and 375 out of 376 councillors seats across the state.
According to the official results released by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) on Sunday, the ruling party swept the polls in all 20 constitutionally recognized local government areas and 37 local council development areas (LCDAs).
The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) managed to clinch a lone councillorship seat in Ward D of Yaba LCDA, marking the only seat not secured by the APC.
Among those declared winners in the chairmanship category are Hon. Olamilekan Olu Akindipe (Lampholder) in Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area, Akinpelu Ibrahim Johnson in Alimosho, Barr. Moyosore Adedoyin Ogunlewe in Kosofe, and Hon. Haruna Olatunbosun Aruwe in Mushin.
Other areas secured by the APC include Surulere, Oshodi-Isolo, Ojo, Ikorodu, Agege, Lagos Island, Ifako-Ijaiye, Amuwo-Odofin, Lagos Mainland, as well as LCDAs such as Yaba, Eti-Osa East, Apapa Iganmu, Epe, and Lekki.
However, the opposition parties have strongly criticised the conduct of the elections. The PDP, Labour Party, and Social Democratic Party (SDP) raised concerns about alleged electoral malpractices, including ballot stuffing, voter suppression, and the denial of access to polling units.
The Youth Party, in a statement on Sunday signed by its Lagos Chapter Chair, Francisco Doregos, described the election as “shambolic” and “blatantly rigged.”
The party accused LASIEC of bias, citing the appointment of known APC loyalists as electoral commissioners.
It also alleged the use of the Department of State Services (DSS) to harass its candidates and criticized the absence of key electoral processes like proper voter register display.
In a separate protest, the Lagos chapter of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) boycotted the elections entirely.
In a statement signed by State Chairperson Ronnie Dikko-Kila, the NNPP condemned LASIEC’s decision to conduct elections in 57 councils, disregarding a Supreme Court ruling which recognises only 20 LGAs.
The NNPP also accused the commission of imposing illegal and excessive nomination fees and failing to ensure transparency and fairness.
With this victory, APC has consolidated its grassroot support in Lagos – a positive development ahead of the 2027 general elections.
