The Allied People’s Movement (APM) has defended its presidential candidate and Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, over his call for an international investigation into the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, describing the strong criticism from leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as suspicious.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, the party argued that calls for an independent probe should not attract hostility if there is nothing to conceal.
According to the APM, Governor Makinde’s appeal for international scrutiny was aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability in the handling of the kidnapping, rather than undermining Nigeria’s sovereignty.
The party noted that the governor had specifically urged appropriate international human rights and accountability institutions, including mechanisms within the United Nations system, to examine the circumstances surrounding the abduction and its resolution. It quoted Makinde as saying that such scrutiny would reinforce confidence in Nigeria’s institutions and ensure that anyone found culpable, regardless of status or political affiliation, is held accountable.
The APM maintained that seeking international cooperation in addressing terrorism is not unprecedented, pointing out that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has, on several occasions, appealed for global collaboration in combating terrorism, including at the United Nations General Assembly and during engagements with foreign security agencies.
The party questioned why some APC leaders opposed Makinde’s request for an international review, insisting that a genuine search for the truth should be welcomed rather than resisted.
It also urged prominent public officials to support efforts aimed at establishing the facts surrounding the incident instead of criticising the governor’s position.
Reaffirming its support for Makinde, the APM said it would continue to back initiatives that promote accountability and strengthen public confidence in the country’s security architecture.
The party also commended Nigeria’s security agencies for the successful rescue of the abducted pupils and teachers, praising their professionalism and dedication in the fight against terrorism.
APM called on security personnel to remain steadfast in their efforts to protect lives and property across the country.
