The Apple Vision Pro hasn’t been a huge success in the market. However, Apple hasn’t given up on the technology, which could play a key role in the company’s future. One area where Vision OS falls short is gaming. Now, according to reports, Apple partnered with Sony to provide PSVR2 controllers to the Vision Pro.
The potential of the Apple Vision Pro is quite big, but the current state of the headset and software ecosystem didn’t seem to convince many to shell out the $3,500 Apple asked for. One of the main uses that many imagined when Apple introduced the product was immersive gaming. Sadly, even today, the native game catalog is quite limited. Most of the titles available are iPad and iPhone games for which you don’t need to buy an expensive VR product.
Apple and Sony could soon announce support for PSVR2 controllers on the Vision Pro
That said, Apple could be working to change things up going forward. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman recently revealed that the Vision Pro could receive support for Sony PSVR2 controllers soon. One of Apple’s potential mistakes with the Apple Vision Pro was the lack of a native controller. The Cupertino giant was confident—perhaps too confident—that the “finger” navigation system was enough to enjoy all the product’s possibilities. In a headset that is already expensive, it is even more disappointing that it doesn’t come with controllers, forcing you to spend even more money.
According to the report, Apple and Sony planned to announce the partnership “weeks ago.” Apple has also been consulting developers on whether they would adapt their apps or games to the PSVR2 controllers. Meanwhile, Sony has been working for months on adapting the controllers to Vision OS. If the partnership becomes a reality, Apple could start selling PSVR2 controllers on its own. This is something that not even Sony does, as it only offers the PSVR2 platform as a whole.
A potential improvement for gaming and productivity in Vision OS
Apple offering VR controllers would be great news for the Vision Pro. Not only would it be beneficial for Apple’s first VR headset, but it’d also benefit future Vision OS-powered products. According to reports, Apple has indefinitely halted Vision Pro 2 development while it tries to make a more affordable Vision Pro.
The PSVR2 controllers would not only boost gaming on the Apple Vision Pro. Designed specifically for VR environments, the they would enhance precision in menu navigation and option selection within Vision OS apps. So, your productivity in professional design and editing apps would also get a nice boost.
