At the Wicked: For Good premiere in Singapore last week, musician and actress Ariana Grande was grabbed by a man, and he’s now received a prison sentence.
In a report by BBC News, 26-year-old Johnson Wen was found guilty of being a public nuisance, as captured on video by onlookers at the event. Wen has been sentenced to nine days in prison following the incident after he attempted to jump the barricades a second time and was pinned down.
During the trial, Wen pleaded guilty, and prosecutors have declared he’s a “serial intruder” with several videos, including Katy Perry and The Weeknd, showing Wen jumping on stage and being escorted away. Australian media have clarified that Wen is banned from several stadiums and has been fined heavily.
The videos show Wen jumping over the barriers separating the cast and crew from fans, and grabbing Grande by her shoulders. Grande’s co-star Cynthia Erivo jumps in the way, and security escorts Wen away from the scene. Wen can be charged up to S$2,000 ($1,537) and up to three months in prison, but has received nine days.
Grande hasn’t commented on the incident since, but Erivo has made some elusive comments regarding the situation and stated, “We have come through some stuff in our lives, our daily workings… even this last week, let’s be honest.” Wen has told the court he would “not do it again.”
After the incident took place, Wen posted on his Instagram story stating he was “free after being arrested” amid outrage for Grande due to her past trauma from public events such as the Manchester Arena bombing in England during her concert on May 22, where 22 people lost their lives and 116 people were injured.
Grande is starring alongside Erivo’s Elphaba as Glinda and recently released Wicked: One Wonderful Night, which featured many of the cast recreating the songs and stage production live for one night via NBC. Songs included during the show were from Wicked and the upcoming sequel, Wicked: For Good.
Wicked: For Good is already breaking records, including Fandango’s PG-rated top sellers, beating Frozen 2, Wicked, and Beauty and the Beast.
Grande is continuing to attend public events and is expected to be present at the final premiere in New York City later today (November 17) before Wicked: For Good premieres in theaters on November 21.
