The Nigerian Army has donated a 30,000-litre capacity solar-powered water borehole to Basawa Community in Sabon-Gari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, inaugurated the project in Zaria on Friday, saying that the gesture was meant to improve the living standard of the people.
Oluyede, represented by the Commandant Armoured Corps, Maj.-Gen.Obinna Ajunwa, said the donation was geared toward strengthening civil-military relationship.
He said the inauguration of the project was also part of the activities to commemorate this year’s Nigerian Army Day Celebration.
He said that the project reflected the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to fulfill its mandate through the conduct of critical aspects of the non-kinetic operations to host communities nationwide.
“The choice of Basawa Community for the project is justified as the Nigerian Army holds the peace-loving people of Basawa in high esteem for their consistent support,” he said.
Oluyede said the inauguration of the project would also address the critical need for clean water, which is essential for survival, health and economic development.
He, therefore, urged the community to take ownership of the project and ensure its sustainability through proper maintenance and management.
The army boss affirmed his resolve to always provide the required leadership and other operational enablers for the army troops to get the job done.
The District Head of Basawa,
Alhaji Haruna Bamalli, commended the army for the kind gesture, saying that the community would forever remain grateful to the organisation.
Bamalli promised that they would do their best to ensure adequate maintenance of the facility.
According to him, the community has professionals, who would be deployed to the maintenance team to ensure the sustainability of the facility. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
