Arsenal have claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Chelsea in a thrilling Premier League London derby at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
Chelsea made a flying start when Morgan Rogers put the visitors ahead just 77 seconds into the contest. Arsenal, however, responded strongly and gradually took control of the game.
The hosts thought they had restored parity through Riccardo Calafiori, but the effort was ruled out for offside. Arsenal continued to press, and their persistence eventually paid off in the 25th minute.
Former Chelsea forward Kai Havertz levelled the score with a composed finish, sending the two sides into the interval at 1-1.
Arsenal then completed the turnaround shortly after the restart. Martin Ødegaard put Mikel Arteta’s side in front in the 50th minute after Havertz cleverly allowed the ball to run through for the Arsenal captain to finish.
Chelsea pushed for an equaliser as the match entered its closing stages. However, Arsenal remained organised and defended their advantage despite sustained pressure from the visitors.
David Raya was also called upon late in the game, producing an important save to preserve Arsenal’s lead and ensure the champions collected all three points.
The victory extends Arsenal’s impressive recent record against Chelsea.
The Gunners had already gone unbeaten in their previous 11 meetings with the Blues in all competitions before Sunday’s encounter.
For Chelsea, the defeat represents a setback after their encouraging start to the campaign. Xabi Alonso’s side had entered the derby with two wins from their opening matches and seven goals scored, but Arsenal’s resilience ultimately proved decisive.
Arsenal, meanwhile, have continued their strong start to the Premier League season. After beating Aston Villa 1-0 in their previous league outing, Arteta’s team have now added another significant victory against one of their London rivals.
The result underlines Arsenal’s ability to recover from difficult situations. Despite conceding almost immediately, the Gunners maintained their composure, found an equaliser and then produced the winning goal early in the second half.
Chelsea will now have to regroup quickly, while Arsenal will take confidence from another victory in a fixture that has increasingly favoured them in recent seasons.
