The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a two-week total and comprehensive warning strike across all public universities in Nigeria.
This was confirmed by the ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, during a press briefing held on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at the University of Abuja.
Prof. Piwuna announced that the strike will begin from midnight on Monday, October 13, 2025, and all branches of the union have been directed to withdraw their services immediately.
According to him, there is “nothing sufficient on ground” to stop the implementation of the ASUU National Executive Council’s resolution, following the expiration of the 14-day notice earlier issued to the Federal Government on September 28, 2025.
He emphasized that the strike will be total and comprehensive, affecting all academic activities across Nigerian public universities until the end of the two-week period.
This decision follows ASUU’s continued frustration with what it describes as the Federal Government’s failure to implement agreements reached in previous negotiations, including the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement, university revitalization funding, and lecturers’ welfare improvements.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, stated earlier in the week that the government was in the final stages of talks with ASUU and other university unions to find a lasting solution to the issues affecting the nation’s tertiary education system.
With this latest development, academic activities in public universities across the country will be suspended for the next two weeks as the union and the government attempt to resolve yet another phase of their long-standing dispute.
