MAKURDI – The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, (ASUU-MOAUM), formerly known as Benue State University (BSU), has suspended the strike action recently embarked upon by the institution over issues of unpaid entitlements.
The suspension of the strike action, which is with immediate effect, directs academic staff of the university to resume official duties with immediate effect.
ASUU-MOAUM, stated that the suspension of the action was granted by the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Union, following the intervention by the NEC of ASUU.
In a statement made available to newsmen in Makurdi on Wednesday, Chairperson ASUU-MOAUM, Comrade Dr. Ali Sule Ako, noted that the intervention to call off the industrial action was reached after a tripartite agreement involving the Union, Benue State Government, and the University Administration.
Sule, explained that ASUU-MOAUM, accepted to suspend the strike after the successful signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) arising from the tripartite agreement.
While he argued that the agreement is a commitment by all parties to addressing the issues that led to the strike, through dialogue and mutual understanding, the chairperson of the Union, stated that the action taken is a demonstration by the Union to make sacrifices in the interest of the University community.
It therefore stressed that the Union expects the State Government and the University Administration to reciprocate by implementing the terms of the MOU, to the latter, and respecting the principles of collective bargaining.
The statement signed by the chairman ASUU-BSU, said, “The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has granted approval for the suspension of the strike action embarked upon by the ASUU chapter of the Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University.
“The decision to suspend the industrial action became necessary following the successful signing of a MoU, arising from a tripartite agreement involving the Union, the Benue State Government, and the University Administration.
“The agreement reflects the commitment of all parties to addressing the issues that led to the strike through constructive dialogue and mutual understanding.
“Having demonstrated good faith and a willingness to make sacrifices in the interest of the University community, the Union expects the government and the university administration to reciprocate by faithfully implementing the terms of the MoU and respecting the principles and rules of collective bargaining.
“The Union believes that sustained industrial harmony can only be achieved when agreements freely entered into are honoured promptly and in good faith” he said.
In conclusion, Sule, said, “Consequently, the strike action has been suspended with immediate effect.
“All academic staff of the University are hereby directed to resume their official duties immediately and continue to discharge their responsibilities diligently.
“The Union appreciates the understanding, patience, and solidarity shown by its members, students, parents, and the general public throughout the period of the industrial action.
“It (Union) remains committed to defending the welfare of its members while ensuring the continued growth and development of the University through peaceful engagement and constructive dialogue”, Sule emphasised. End
