Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has sent a clear message to anyone plotting to tamper with the 2027 governorship election, saying attempts to rig the poll “will be met with madness.”
A video of the governor speaking at a public gathering has been circulating widely online, stirring conversations across the state.
In the clip, he cautioned politicians who may be thinking of manipulating the process, adding that voters in Oyo are now far more aware and ready to defend their votes.
“In a few months, I will be out of here. I have already started preparations for the transition,” Seyi Makinde said as quoted by the Punch.
“In 2027, other players will be there. If they think attacking Seyi Makinde and politicising this issue will make the people vote for them, maybe they should think again. Oyo State people are wiser.”
He went further to warn that anyone considering election malpractice should rethink their plans.
According to him, “The next set of leaders will be the ultimate deciders. If you think you can rig the gubernatorial elections in Oyo State in 2027, think again. Were, la n fi wo were (madness will be met with madness).”
This is not the first time the governor has addressed the politics surrounding his succession. In October, during a stakeholders’ consultative forum on the 2026 Budget in Ibadan, he stressed that the power to choose the next governor rests strictly with the electorate, not with political heavyweights or those who feel entitled to the seat.
At that meeting, he said, “Oyo State has gone beyond the era of politics based on entitlement or propaganda. The decision of who becomes the next governor rests with all eligible voters in this state.”
Meanwhile, Makinde has also commented on growing speculation about his own future, particularly talk of the 2027 presidential race.
During a visit to Fashola Farm in Oyo town on Friday, he said he is qualified to run but will make his position known at the right time.
“I am capable of making my own decisions,” he said. “I will address the issue publicly when the time is right.”
