Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, on Friday led several Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders to the Federal High Court in Abuja ahead of the judgment on a suit seeking to stop the party’s planned national convention.
Naijaonpoint understands that the convention, slated for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State, is expected to produce new national officers for the opposition party.
However, three PDP members, Austin Nwachukwu (Imo PDP chairman), Amah Nnanna (Abia PDP chairman), and Turnah George (South-South PDP Secretary) filed the suit, alleging a breach of the party’s constitution in the convention’s preparation.
In their suit, the plaintiffs argued that the planned convention violated the PDP constitution and due process, urging the court to restrain the party’s leadership and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from proceeding with the exercise.
The court’s judgment is expected to determine whether the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) can go ahead with preparations for the elective event.
The case has drawn wide attention within the PDP, with key stakeholders—including sitting governors—closely monitoring the outcome, which could shape the party’s internal power structure ahead of the 2027 elections.
PDP Governors Caution Wike, Call For Unity
The PDP Governors’ Forum had earlier, in August, cautioned the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and other influential figures against taking actions that could derail the national convention.
The forum, chaired by Governor Bala Mohammed, warned that any attempt to manipulate or disrupt the process would be detrimental to the unity of the party.
Governor Mohammed’s presence in court on Friday alongside other party leaders was seen as a show of solidarity with the current leadership and a signal of the governors’ interest in ensuring that due process prevails.
Amid the legal tussle, the PDP has postponed the screening of aspirants for the national convention, citing “unforeseen circumstances.”
In a statement signed by the Chairman of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) and Adamawa State Governor, Umaru Fintiri, the party announced the temporary suspension of the exercise originally scheduled for October 28, 2025.
The statement reads, “The National Convention Organising Committee of our great Party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has put on hold the screening of aspirants for the 2025 Elective National Convention, earlier scheduled for Tuesday, October 28, 2025, due to unforeseen circumstances.
“A new date will be communicated once fixed. The NCOC regrets any inconvenience caused by ...ponement.”
