Suspected armed bandits have carried out coordinated night attacks on several rural communities in Kwara State, abducting multiple residents, injuring villagers, and rustling cattle in a series of incidents that have heightened security concerns across the affected areas.
Residents and local security sources said the attackers stormed the communities almost at the same time, suggesting that the assaults were carefully organised.
The raids triggered panic among villagers, many of whom fled their homes as gunmen fired shots during the operations.
One of the worst-hit locations recorded several abductions, including a respected community figure, Alhaji Yusuf Yunusa, who was reportedly taken alongside four other residents.
Yunusa is widely known in the area as an education entrepreneur and the proprietor of a nursery and primary school.
A local source said the victim had been preparing for a family celebration before the incident occurred.
“He had been making arrangements for an Islamic graduation ceremony for his child scheduled to take place in Lagos this weekend,” the source said.
“The attack came as a shock to family members and neighbours who never expected such an incident.”
Meanwhile, other communities in the same axis also suffered similar attacks, with several people reportedly taken away by the gunmen.
According to residents familiar with the incidents, the assailants moved swiftly between settlements and targeted homes believed to be occupied at the time.
“In one of the communities, at least six people were abducted, while two others were seized in another nearby settlement,” a security source said.
“The pattern of the attacks indicates that the criminals had detailed knowledge of the areas.”
The violence also disrupted preparations for a wedding ceremony in one of the communities, as some of those kidnapped were said to be relatives of the bride.
“The attackers abducted the bride’s mother and another person who was helping with the preparations,” a resident said. “They also made away with livestock during the raid.”
Gunshots fired during the attacks left at least two villagers injured. One of the victims reportedly sustained a gunshot wound to the arm after the bandits opened fire while residents attempted to flee.
Community leaders say the latest incidents have deepened fears about the spread of banditry into rural settlements in the southern part of Kwara State.
A local official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said residents were increasingly worried about the growing activities of armed groups in the region.
“These attacks are becoming more frequent and more coordinated,” the official said. “Communities are calling for stronger security presence to prevent further abductions and violence.”
Security agencies have yet to issue an official statement on the attacks, but residents are urging authorities to intensify surveillance and response operations across vulnerable communities in the area.
