A joint security patrol in Bauchi State has suffered a casualty after armed bandits launched a surprise attack near Yankari Game Reserve, leaving one vigilante member dead and four suspects in police custody.
Authorities said the incident occurred while a combined team of police officers and community vigilantes was carrying out routine security patrols in the forest corridor surrounding the reserve.
According to security sources, the patrol unit was suddenly confronted by gunmen who had concealed themselves along the Bakin Layi axis of the reserve.
The attackers reportedly opened fire on the team, triggering a brief but intense gunfight.
During the confrontation, a 27-year-old vigilante member identified as Hambali Alhaji Sa’adu from Mai-Ari village sustained critical gunshot injuries. Medical personnel later confirmed his death despite attempts to save him.
Police sources disclosed that the fallen volunteer had been part of local security efforts aimed at preventing criminal infiltration around communities bordering the reserve.
Following the ambush, the joint patrol regrouped and launched a pursuit operation against the fleeing attackers.
Security operatives reportedly tracked the gunmen through nearby forest routes and engaged them again.
“The team responded swiftly after the ambush and mounted a counter-operation that forced the bandits to scatter,” a police official said.
“Some of the suspects escaped with suspected gunshot wounds as officers maintained pressure on them.”
The follow-up operation led to the arrest of four individuals believed to be connected to the attack. Investigators are currently interrogating the suspects to determine their roles and to uncover other members of the criminal network.
Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu described the late vigilante as a courageous community defender who lost his life protecting others.
“He demonstrated exceptional bravery in the face of danger,” the commissioner said.
“His sacrifice will not be forgotten, and the command remains committed to ensuring those responsible face justice.”
The police chief also ordered intensified search operations in the forests surrounding Yankari Game Reserve to track down the remaining gunmen and recover illegal weapons.
Security authorities further praised the continued cooperation between law enforcement officers and local vigilante groups in tackling banditry across rural areas of Bauchi State.
Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and promptly share credible information with security agencies to help disrupt criminal activities in vulnerable communities.
