While DC was not as consistent in making movies as Marvel, especially given that they were not released in a specific order, it has been enormously successful in terms of animated series and films. Justice League: Flashpoint Paradox, Batman vs. Robin, and Justice League Dark: Apokolips War are just a handful of the incredible DC animated films, and the studio is delivering another intriguing addition this year.

Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham is one of the most anticipated DC films of 2023, alongside Blue Beetle and Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The film is based on a three-issue comic book series of the same name published by DC Comics’ Elseworlds imprint from November 2000 to January 2001. At the San Diego Comic-Con in 2022, it was revealed that an animated film based on these comics would be released in 4K Blu-ray. With the recent release of the DC trailer for the highly anticipated animated film, we have every reason to be thrilled. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming DC animated film Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham.

It’s the late 1920s, and Bruce Wayne has just returned from a sea adventure in icy Antarctica searching for something. Apparently, Cobblepot’s crewmate August Grendon attempts to free a tentacled monster by chipping away at the ice but fails when Bruce Wayne blows everything up to put an end to his scheme. Despite ending a disaster, Bruce ends up in another as a prophecy leads him to some unfathomable occurrences that turn out to be the work of his own father.

An ancient evil has awakened in Gotham, and a book holds the secrets to everything that might burn the city down. To stop these evil entities from wreaking havoc in the city, Bruce Wayne, as Batman, must seek assistance from other heroes, all while dealing with foes who will not stop until they have destroyed everything in their path.

The official trailer released by DC revealed every detail of the story, including the appearances of Talia Al Ghul, who attempts to resurrect his deceased father Ra’s Al Ghul, Thomas Wayne, who appears to be behind everything, and some familiar DC Comics personalities. The film promises an engaging premise, and when combined with the studios’ stunning animation, we may expect another DC spectacular.

The voices of Batman and other characters shown in the trailer demonstrate how selective the cast was for the animated film. David Giuntoli’s baritone voice as Batman fit the film’s ambiance flawlessly, bringing back the vintage Gotham vigilante. He previously voiced Bruce Wayne in 2021’s Batman: Soul of the Dragon, and as an actor, he has starred in numerous films and television shows, including Grimm, 13 Hours, and Key and Peele. Tati Gabrielle, best known for her performances in Kaleidoscope, Uncharted, and The 100, will make her DC animated debut as Kai Li Cain, Batman’s closest ally.

Brian George will reprise his role as Alfred, which he previously voiced in Batman: The Killing Joke and Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. His other noteworthy roles include King Theoden in The Lord of the Rings: The Battle of Middle Earth, Mr. Frowney in Steven Universe, and Pyko in the animated series Guardians of the Galaxy. The cast of Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham also includes Christopher Gorham (Oliver Queen), David Dastmalchian (Grendon), Emily O’Brien (Talia al Ghul), Navid Negahban (Ra’s al Ghul), William Salyers (Cobblepot), Darin De Paul (Thomas Wayne), Gideon Adlon (Oracle), John DiMaggio (James Gordon), and Patrick Fabian (Harvey Dent).

Christopher Berkely and Sam Liu are directing the upcoming DC animated film. While the former is a successful animation director, having previously handled Teen Titans, Men in Black: The Series, The Batman animated series, and Young Justice, the latter has been directing DC animated projects for over two decades, mainly in the Batman franchise. Green Lantern: The Animated Series, Beware the Batman, Batman: The Killing Joke, Batman: Soul of the Dragon, and many more are among his most well-known works as an animation director.

Meanwhile, Jase Ricci is in charge of the screenplay based on the comics by Mike Mignola and Richard Pace. The film is produced by James Krieg (Batman: Gotham by Gaslight), co-director Sam Liu, and Kimberly S. Moreau (Legion of Superheroes), with executive producers Sam Register (Beware the Batman) and Michael E. Uslan (Batman Begins) in association with Warner Bros. Animation.

Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham will be available on March 28 to purchase digitally through Apple TV, Prime Video, Vudu, and Google Play Store.

In addition, as revealed at the San Diego Comic-Con in 2022, the film will be released in 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray, which will be accessible for purchase online and in-store at major retailers. Fans can also pre-order a copy if they want to watch the film as soon as it is released.
