Security analyst, Brant Philip, has revealed new details about the failed coup attempt in the Benin Republic, disclosing that mutineers carried out a deadly attack on the residence of a senior military official hours before the attempted takeover.
Philip stated that the mutineers, led by Colonel Pascal Tigri, stormed the home of General Bertin Bada, Director of the Military Cabinet to the Head of State, ahead of the Sunday coup announcement.
In a post on 𝕏 (formerly Twitter), Philip wrote, “A few hours before the coup was announced, mutineers stormed the home of General Bertin Bada, Director of the Military Cabinet of the Head of State of Benin. His wife was injured and later succumbed to her wounds. His daughter was also injured in the attack.”
The attack reportedly occurred just before the rebels seized control of the national television station as part of their failed attempt to oust the government.
Meanwhile, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has ordered the immediate deployment of its Standby Force to the Republic of Benin in response to the recent attempted military coup.
ECOWAS, in a statement released on Sunday, said the action aligns with the provisions of the 1999 Protocol on Conflict Prevention, Management, Resolution, Peacekeeping, and Security.
According to ECOWAS, the deployment was approved after consultations among ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, will include troops from Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, and Ghana.
