The Military Chief of Staff and Director of the Military Cabinet to President Patrice Talon, General Bertin Bada, has resumed official duties following the failed coup attempt in the Benin Republic that claimed the life of his wife.
Bada was present at the council of ministers meeting held in Cotonou on Monday, hours after mutinous soldiers launched a coordinated assault on his residence as part of their bid to topple the government.
During the meeting, the council observed a one-minute silence in honour of all victims of the foiled coup, including General Bada’s wife, whose death marked one of the most personal tragedies of the failed insurrection.
An earlier report by Naijaonpoint revealed that Bada’s Cotonou residence was attacked by soldiers involved in the mutiny, which was swiftly quashed by loyalist forces.
According to a report by LSI Africa, the assailants stormed Bada’s home with the intent to destabilise the country’s top military command and disrupt the civilian government.
“Benin: General Bertin Bada, the military cabinet director of President Patrice Talon, has lost his wife during the assault carried out against his home in Cotonou by a group of soldiers involved in the attempted coup d’état,” the statement read.
The Benin government has since regained full control, with several coup plotters arrested and others still on the run.
