Former Senate President, Senator David Mark, has warned that residents of Benue State might be forced to defend themselves due to the escalation of killings in the state. Mark made this statement in response to the recent surge in violence, which has resulted in the loss of lives and destruction of homes and livelihoods.
Mark described the situation as “senseless, tragic and unacceptable” and urged the federal government to fulfil its constitutional obligation to protect the lives and property of all Nigerians. He also called on the Benue State government to intensify efforts to secure the state and restore public confidence.
The former Senate President appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, and stakeholders to remain vigilant and support security agencies in identifying and bringing perpetrators to justice. He urged residents to remain law-abiding, united, and committed to the values of community and brotherhood.
Mark’s statement comes amid growing concerns over the security situation in Benue State, where recent attacks have left many dead and displaced. He emphasized the need for collective action against the invaders, saying, “We must stand together, mobilise, and speak with one voice against the invaders. We must not succumb to fear.”
