Bhairon Singh Rathore Longwala was well known to have participated in the Battle of Longewala during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War. In 1997 in Hindi film Border, Suniel Shetty portrayed him. Bhairon was 81 years old when he died.

Bhairon Singh Rathore Longwala’s Family And Education

Bhairon Singh Rathore Longwala hailed from Solankiya Tala village, Shergarh district, Princely State of Jodhpur, India. After finishing his education, Bhairon Singh Rathore joined the Border Security Force (BSF) in early 1963. He owned nearly 15.6  acres of agricultural land. He got married to Prem Kanwar in 1973. He is survived by a son and a daughter and his son’s name is Sawai Singh.

Bhairon Singh Rathore Longwala Professional Career

In 1971, as Lance Naik, Bhairon Singh Rathore was deployed at a post in Longewala, Rajasthan, India. Rathore was a part of the 14th Battalion’s 3rd platoon’s in the Delta Company. Before starting the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War, his battalion was later on replaced by the 120 men of the Alpha Company of the 23rd Battalion of the Punjab Regiment which was commanded by Major later Brigadier, Kuldip Singh Chandpuri.  As per records of the BSF, after a Light Machine Gunner got killed, Bhairon Singh took over the LMG and kept firing at the enemy for 6 to 7 hours and further inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy.

Lance Naik Bhairon Singh took a light machine gun and then inflicted heavy casualties on the advancing enemy. It was only their courage and sheer determination to do or die and that day Lance Naik Bhairon Singh became the greatest inspiration to his other comrades on .... He played a very significant role in denying access to Pakistani forces in the state of Rajasthan. Longewala ended the war on the morning of the 5th of December in 1971 when the Indian Air Force (IAF) sent its Hunter jets which attacked the Pakistani armored vehicles. Bhairon Singh further continued to serve in BSF till his retirement from the rank of Naik in early 1987.

Bhairon Singh was honored with the Sena Medal for gallantry by the Indian Government in 1972.

Bhairon Singh Rathore Longwala Death

On 19th of December in 2022, Bhairon Singh Rathore Longwala breathed last time at the AIIMS hospital in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Several big politicians including Narendra Modi paid tribute to him. Following Rathore’s death, his body was taken for a wreath-laying ceremony at the Subsidiary Training Center in Jodhpur, Rajasthan and he was cremated on the 20th of December 2022 with full military honors.
