THE National Electricity Grid experienced its fourth system failure of the year today, resulting in a nationwide blackout affecting states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
This is the fourth collapse of the national grid in 2024, following incidents on February 4, March 28, and April 15.
The most recent collapse occurred at 3:10 pm yesterday, as reported by electricity distribution companies.
In a statement, Kaduna Electric, serving Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara states, attributed the power outage in their service areas to the System Collapse of the National Grid at 3:10 pm. They assured customers that power supply would be restored once the National Grid was back online.
Similarly, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), catering to the FCT, Niger, Kogi, and Nasarawa states, linked the power outage to the national grid collapse, affecting their franchise areas.
The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company Plc cited a fire outbreak at the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) as the cause of the forced outage affecting Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Kwara, and parts of Ekiti states.
Enugu Electricity Distribution Plc reported a general system collapse in the South-East geopolitical zone, resulting in a loss of supply to Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States.
The Jos Electricity Distribution Company, serving Plateau, Bauchi, Benue, and Gombe states, also confirmed the grid collapse incident.
President Bola Tinubu recently expressed disappointment in Nigeria’s power generation capacity, describing the current 4.5 gigawatt capacity as inadequate.
