Blue Protocol: Star Resonance – Free-to-Play MMORPG Hits 95,000 Player Peak on Steam

anime characters flying through the sky

We’re in a resplendent era of anime-themed gacha games. After Genshin Impact was released in 2020, myriad competitors entered the market, and Genshin shows no signs of stopping after multiple massive expansions. Now there’s another game vying for the crown: Blue Protocol: Star Resonance.

According to info from Steam Charts, Blue Protocol: Star Resonance has reached a roughly 95,000 player peak in the 24 hours since its release. How much it’ll continue to grow, however, will depend on the player reactions to its various forms of monetization.

Blue Protocol: Star Resonance Is Climbing Up The Steam Charts

Roughly 95,000 Players And Counting

As one of a series of games that mirrors a lot of the same beats as Genshin Impact (down to the menus and monetization), Blue Protocol: Star Resonance is now out and is free-to-play. It’s essentially a reworked incarnation of Blue Protocol from 2023, following that game’s shutdown earlier this year.

Available currently on PC, Android, and iOS, Start Resonance allows you to create your own custom character, and venture forth in a world of combat, fishing, crafting, and exploration. There are also several launch events out now, including firework celebrations and combat trials. If you’re interested in trying it out, now seems like a good time while the game has some momentum.

Blue Protocol: Star Resonance Is Free-To-Play, But Has Monetization

Including Gacha

Ever since the beta for Blue Protocol: Star Resonance, players have been skeptical of the monetization efforts for the game, and they’re likely going to turn some people off. So far, reviews are mixed because the game includes several season passes, a monthly service option, and multiple forms of gacha, some of which impact gameplay.

One chief complaint is its multiple currency types, which are confusing for many players, even in a free-to-play experience (including multiple currencies that have similar-sounding names). As one Steam reviewer puts it: “Blue Protocol: Star Resonance is the free-to-play anime MMORPG that is so visually stunning, you might accidentally forget it’s designed to be your second mortgage.”

One thing people can agree on is that the visual elements are eye-catching. Hopefully, more content is released for it, so there’s more for fans to enjoy, though games like this typically don’t walk back gacha elements. Many of these types of games are at a crossroads, as there is a critical mass of gacha games that require a lot of dedication from players, but not enough time or money to actually enjoy them all.

In any case, Blue Protocol: Star Resonance is free-to-play so that you can try it for yourself. Personally, I’m not sure how much time I have for another daily/weekly quest-filled time sink like this.
