We now know roughly when David Fincher’s intriguing new movie, The Adventures of Cliff Booth, a sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, may be hitting theaters. Brad Pitt will return to his Oscar-winning role of stuntman Cliff Booth, the co-lead to Leonardo DiCaprio’s actor Rick Dalton in the previous movie, which follows the duo during the twilight of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
In a new article about Netflix and AMC Theatres moving past their previous conflicts to bring more of the streamer’s projects to the movie chain, Variety reports that Netflix is “contemplating a more robust rollout” for The Adventures of Cliff Booth and is eyeing a release date in the summer of 2026, avoiding competing with Greta Gerwig’s The Chronicles of Narnia in November.
Though the companies have historically disagreed on Netflix’s typically short theatrical runs, AMC recently confirmed that it would show both KPop Demon Hunters for its theatrical return during Halloween weekend and the Stranger Things series finale. Netflix has released other movies theatrically this year, such as A House of Dynamite and Frankenstein, without AMC’s participation.
Netflix typically releases the movies it hopes will earn Oscar nominations in theaters for a brief time in order for them to be eligible, before debuting them on the streaming platform. While The Adventures of Cliff Booth may be an awards season hopeful, aiming to follow in the footsteps of its predecessor, Netflix is likely hoping it can also draw the turnout of a traditional theatrical hit.
While not much is known about The Adventures of Cliff Booth‘s story, insiders revealed the sequel’s connection to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in April 2025, confirming that it will follow the life of the titular character eight years after the events of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. While Fincher replaces him as director, Tarantino wrote the new script.
Besides Pitt, The Adventures of Cliff Booth‘s cast also includes Timothy Olyphant, Elizabeth Debicki, Carla Gugino, J.E. Burton, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Scott Caan. Pitt and DiCaprio were the biggest names in the previous installment, which also features then rising star Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate and several future stars as the Manson Family cult.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood grossed $392 million on a budget of $90 million in the last year before the box office would be disrupted by the pandemic, and earned 10 Oscar nominations. The Adventures of Cliff Booth faces a different market but has the sequel status to turn it into a theatrical summer hit for Netflix; but it also has to contend with a massive budget of $200 million.
