The House of Representatives on Thursday witnessed another round of defections as six lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) dumped their parties for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaker of the House, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, announced the defections during plenary after reading the individual letters submitted by the lawmakers.

Five of the defectors are from Enugu State, while one represents Plateau State. The lawmakers who joined the APC are Daniel Ago (LP, Plateau), Chidi Obetta (PDP, Enugu), Anayo Onwuegbu (PDP, Enugu), Dennis Agbo (PDP, Enugu), Martins George (PDP, Enugu), and Nnaji Nnolim (PDP, Enugu).

In their letters to the Speaker, the lawmakers attributed their defection to deep-seated internal crises and irreconcilable differences within their former parties.

Following the announcement, the defectors were led to the Speaker’s seat, where they were officially received into the APC fold amid applause from members of the ruling party. Thursday’s development adds to a series of defections that have strengthened the APC’s numerical advantage in the Green Chamber in recent weeks.

Several PDP and LP lawmakers have in recent times switched allegiance to the APC, citing instability and factionalism in their previous platforms. The latest defection also reflects a wider political realignment across the country particularly in the South-East where the APC has intensified efforts to consolidate its base ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a symbolic moment, Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, and APC National Chairman, Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda, were present in the chamber to observe proceedings.
